Which German certificate do you really need?
Do you live in Switzerland and wonder which German certificate is right for your situation? The choice can be confusing: fide-Test, ÖSD exam, SDS exam or telc exam. Each of these certificates has its own purpose and special features. This article will help you understand the differences and find the right German exam for your needs.
The fide test: For naturalization and residence permits
The fide Test Deutsch has been specially developed for people living in Switzerland. If you are seeking a permanent residence permit (C permit) or naturalization, this test is often the first choice. The fide test assesses your language skills in everyday situations: at the doctor's, at the government office, or while shopping. It evaluates both oral and written skills and is based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). Most cantons require at least level B1 in oral skills and A2 in written skills for naturalization.
ÖSD: Internationally recognized with Swiss acceptance
The ÖSD Switzerland (Austrian German Language Diploma) is internationally recognized and is also accepted in Switzerland for various purposes. The ÖSD is a solid choice, especially for academic applications or professional qualifications. The exam is available at all levels from A1 to C2. The ÖSD exam places great emphasis on standard varieties of German, including the High German spoken in Switzerland. For the B1 German exam at the ÖSD, all four skills – reading, listening, writing, and speaking – are tested equally.

SDS: The key to studying at a Swiss university
The SDS certificate (Swiss Digital Language Test) is an officially recognized German test in Switzerland and offers a modern way to reliably prove language skills. The fully digital exam covers levels A1 to B2 and, thanks to its clear structure and practical tasks, enables a realistic assessment of language skills in everyday and professional environments. The SDS is used for naturalization, residence and settlement permits (B/C), family reunification, work and job searches, and to document one's own language skills, among other things. Another advantage is its high flexibility, as an exam date is offered every week.
telc: Flexible and career-oriented
The telc exam (The European Language Certificates) offers the greatest flexibility. There are telc certificates for general German, but also specialized exams for medical professions, nursing, or the commercial sector. In Switzerland, telc is often required for professional purposes and for the recognition of foreign qualifications. The exams are available at all levels and also follow the CEFR. Particularly practical: telc exams take place regularly and the results are available quickly.
Which certificate is right for you?
The choice depends on your goal: the fide test is usually required for naturalization. For university studies, you need the SDS. Professional recognition or international mobility call for ÖSD or telc. Check with the relevant authority or institution to find out which certificate is specifically required.
